The Brig “Amity” sailed into King George Sound on Christmas Day, 1826, carrying men to establish the first British settlement in Western Australia – a settlement which became the town of Albany.

The new “Amity”, a full scale and authentic reproduction of the original vessel, was built and berthed within a few metres of where those first pioneers stepped ashore.

Few towns can boast such a fitting memorial.

Author Les Johnson is a journalist, writer, amateur historian and former seaman, long resident in the Albany district.
