On the 7th July, 1841, the explorer Edward John Eyre, with his Aboriginal companion Wylie, staggered into town after a gruelling crossing of the Great Australian Bight. He stayed for a week at Skerrat’s Family Hotel on the corner of Stirling Terrace and York Street.
