Legal Aid undertook a team-building exercise today in Duke Street Park, where – under the guidance of Menang Elder Vernice Gillies and Menang Man Larry Blight – they constructed two traditional Menang shelters (known as kaunt in the Noongar language), made out of native trees and shrubs.
The Albany Historical Society would like to give our sincere gratitude to Vern and Larry for the opportunity to learn about the shelters from their Kaartdijin Noongar (Noongar knowledge).
The kaunt will remain in the Duke Street Park gardens, so if you’d like the opportunity to see them for yourselves, you can visit Duke Street Park, located next to Patrick Taylor Cottage.
If you’d like to learn more about them, you can listen to Vern Giles here: https://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2012/01/20/3412353.htm
